The track is over 40 years old and began as a clay oval but some what larger. Although not banked as high as Bristol, it was about the same length. Many of the great names in stock car racing made a stop at the mountain at one time or another. The Allison’s (Bobby and Donnie), Richard Petty, David Pearson, The Bakers, Tim Lund, Darrell Waltrip and Neil Bonnett raced here when the NASCAR circuit was called Grand Nationals. So, if someone starts telling some story about Baker sliding out the back door of an ambulance on a stretcher, NASCAR’s first African American driver Wendell Scott taking the motor out of his hauler in the pits and putting it in his racer for a fourth start, or the Allison family landing their Cessna 310 on the strip on the hill behind the grandstands, it’s all true.
